Project at a Glance
With more than 693,000 beneficiaries, the Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project (WaSSIP) aspires to increase access to piped water services and improve sanitation in the selected districts; and to strengthen the capacity of associated institutions; increasing the access to safe piped water supply to 60 percent of the population from the current coverage of 44 percent.

Vision
“Provide access to safe drinking water for all citizens over the medium term (by 2020) with a particular emphasis on increasing the quality of service (in- creasing the proportion of people served through piped water connections to 60% (3 million people) (at present 45%) and tripling coverage by sewerage systems to 7%).”
Project Objectives
There are several objectives of the project.
- Provide safe pipe borne water to people in rural areas
- Provide safe pipe borne drinking water to semi urban areas
- Provide safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to people in estate sector in Nuwara Eliya district
- Ensure safe sanitation facilities
- Improve skills in rural water sector
- Rehabilitate the identified rural water supply schemes
- Construct septage treatment plants in project areas
